This nutritional research study identified the food intake and food choices of students (ages 5 to 8) both before and after introducing them to nutrition education via food characters featured in the Treasure Hunt with the Munch Crunch Bunch story/activity book.

A total of 73 students took part in this effectiveness study. A 1st grade class of 19 students served as a control group.

A detailed food survey was sent home with each student to complete with the help of their parents/guardian. This food questionnaire asked students to check off which food (and approximate amounts) they ate through the course of one day. Categories ranged from soda pop to fresh fruits, fresh vegetables, fast food, and sweet snacks.

The author of the nutrition resource material, Jan Wolterman, then conducted an in-class nutrition activity with each group of students except for the control group. This activity consisted of reading the Treasure Hunt with the Munch Crunch Bunch story/activity book, discussions around the bullet points in the book, (i.e. what did you eat for breakfast?) and playing a lotto type, co-operative game using the foodle (food riddle) cards found in the story/activity book. Each student was given a free book to take home and share with his/her family. Parents were encouraged to read the book to their children and use the foodles on subsequent food shopping trips.

Three weeks later another copy of the food questionnaire was sent home with each student, including students in the control group. Its purpose was to determine if their intake of healthy foods had increased, decreased, or stayed the same.

The results (displayed in the graph) show that for students who participated in the nutrition activity and shared the book with their families, fresh fruit and vegetable consumption increased while intake of high-fat, high-sugar foods decreased. Students in the control group showed no difference in their food choices.

Summary: Nutrition education is highly effective when done with creative and interactive materials that involve parents as well as children. Treasure Hunt with the Munch Crunch Bunch story/activity book helps revolutionize children's eating habits by providing parents with an innovative tool that makes learning about healthy food fun and entertaining.

This research study was conducted and financed by Kid Well Enterprise, publishers of the Treasure Hunt with the Munch Crunch Bunch story/activity book to determine the effectiveness of this nutrition education resource material. The study results were independently reviewed by Ohio’s Evaluation and Assessment Center for Mathematics and Science Education.
